Abstract

914,602. Feeding webs. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. April 23, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 13911/59. Class 100 (1). A web splicing mechanism for providing a continuous supply of web material to a cigarettemaking machine comprises two sources of web material, one of the sources being in use, the other being a replacement, means for splicing the supply of web from one source to that of the other source while the feed of the web to the machine is not interrupted, severing means for cutting the in-use web, the severing and splicing means including a pivoted L-shaped bracket for each web, and the severing and splicing operations taking place at substantially the same time. Feeler arms 74, 76 engage the peripheries of reels 70 and 72, each arm carrying a mercury switch 86, 88 which closes a contact when the corresponding reel becomes exhausted. Closure of such contact energizes solenoid 90 or 92 which rocks brackets 128 or 130 through cables 94 or 96. The webs from the reels 70, 72 are spliced by knurled rollers on the brackets and the in-use web is simultaneously cut by a knife on the actuated bracket. The feeler arms 74, 76 also act as drag brakes in order to tension the web. The webs pass over spring-pressed rollers immediately after being unwound. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the brackets are actuated manually.
