Abstract

Whilst the expiring web-roll is being unwound in contact with the drum 4, the replacement web-roll 9 is positioned at the top of a pair of spaced-apart parallel guides 2 against a pair of stops 13. The parallel guides 2 define a path which is horizontal, straight, inclined or curved. When the expiring web-roll has sufficiently decreased in diameter for it to pass beyond the drum 4 to the stops 8, the replacement web-roll is moved to a position closely adjacent the drum 4 where it is accelerated up to speed by means (not illustrated). Either manually or automatically, the rotating replacement webroll 9, which has previously been prepared with adhesive, is brought into contact with the expiring web passing over the drum 4, thereby causing a splice. At the same time, a knife 23 on pivoted arms 22 is caused to sever the expiring web, and a brake-shoe 24 to contact the expired web-roll to halt rotation thereof. In the particular embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the stops 13 and 14 are propelled along the parallel guides 2 by rotatable threaded spindles 15. However, in the embodiment of (Figs. 2 and 3), the web-rolls are moved along the parallel guide by the force of gravity. To prevent the expiring web-roll jumping when in contact with the drum 4, spaced-apart parallel guides 27 are provided.
