Abstract

1316062 Splicing webs AMF Inc 26 May 1971 [30 May 1970] 17260/71 Heading B8R In apparatus for splicing a replacement web N2 wound on a roll B2 to a running web N1 unwinding from a roll B1, the rolls B1, B2 are mounted on an arm 1 rotatable about a shaft 2, and the adhesively prepared leading end of the web N2 is held ready, by means of suction applied to a guide 5, on a splicing roller 6 positioned adjacent a roller 21 over which the web N1 is led. When the roll B1 is nearly exhausted, a braking arm 7 which monitors the diameter of the roll operates a microswitch whereby a cutter 20 is actuated to sever the web N1 and the roller 6 is urged against the roller 21 to join the leading end of the web N2 to the web N1 at a point forward of the point of severance thereof (Fig. 4, not shown). When the nowunwinding roll B2 reaches a predetermined diameter, as sensed by a second braking arm 27, a further microswitch is actuated whereby the arm 1 is indexed through half a revolution so that the new roll B2 and the exhausted roll B1 interchange positions; the exhausted roll B1 can then be removed and replaced with a standby roll in preparation for the next splicing operation (Figs. 1, 5 and 6, not shown).
