Abstract
1330297 Feeding webs MOLINS MACHINE CO Ltd 9 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60374/69 Heading B8R In a web feeding and splicing device associated with a wrapping machine provided with web draw off rollers (not shown) the expiring end 1a, Fig. 1, of the web 1 moving at a first linear speed is spliced with a leading end of a waiting web 2 by attaching the leading end to the expiring end and driving the leading end after the splice at a second higher linear speed by a pair of rollers 9, 18 the latter of which is movable relative to the roller 9. Higher linear speeds relieve tension in the splice until the splice has reached the rollers in the wrapping machine, the higher linear speed being possible due to a storage loop 2a formed by the waiting web 2. In operation a micro-switch arm 33 sensing the tension in the web 1 trips a micro-switch 34 when the expiring end 1a relieves the tension in the web, whereupon a solenoid 35, Fig. 1, energizes its armature 36 to actuate a onerevolution clutch 39 which causes a rotary arm 41 to trip a detent 30 such that a pivotally mounted blade 23 severs the suction held adhesive portion 21 of the leading end of the web and adheres it to the expiring end portion 1a moving over a splicing table 7 covered with a carpet portion 26. The clutch also causes a similar arm 40 to trip a detent 43 permitting a lever 38 to pivot a knife blade 56 and sever the remaining portion 1a which is held by a suction roller 5 whose periphery is co-operating with a brake 10 applied in consequence of pivoting the knife blade 56. Moreover, the clutch causes rotation of the rollers 9, 18 by driving the former through gears 54, 53, 55 and displacing the roller mounting block 19 by a drive 50. The rollers 9, 18 move the spliced web 2 at a higher rate than the rate of the web 1 drawn off by the machine draw off rollers, the web 2 being drawn off initially from a storage loop 2a and when the splice has passed the machine draw off rollers the tension in the web 2 is transmitted to the waiting web roll, when the rollers 9, 18 have been restored to their resting positions.
