Abstract
913,007. Linear motors. SKINNER CHUCK CO. Oct. 31, 1960 [Nov. 6, 1959], No. 37285/60. Class 35. A travelling-wave electromagnetic actuator for producing rectilinear movement has two relatively movable laminated or slotted magnetic members, an outer cylindrical housing 10, and a plunger 12 movable longitudinally in its bore 13. Housing 10 is composed of two symmetrical mating halves 16 with grooves 18 which form annular recesses 20 to contain bobbin coils 15 when the two halves are joined. Plunger 12 carries a tubular conductive sleeve 27, e.g. of copper, which functions as an infinite number of short circuited turns. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the coils are wound on the plunger and the conductive sleeve is secured in the bore of the housing. The coils 15 may be supplied from a single-phase source through a phase-splitting arrangement, e.g. a capacitor, Fig. 7 (not shown), or from a 3-phase source, Fig. 8 (not shown).
