Abstract
910,474. Ventilators. VENT-AXIA Ltd. Jan. 5, 1961 [Jan. 6, 1960], No. 545/60. Class 137. In a shutter device comprising an open-work support member adapted to be secured in the housing of a ventilating fan, especially at the inlet side of the impeller, a plurality of shutter plates is pivotally mounted adjacent one another and each is out of balance whereby they close automatically when the velocity of the outside air is greater than the induced air flow, and when there is no induced air flow. A manual means is also provided in the shutter device, whereby the plates can be locked in a closed position and an open position. The shutter device comprises a spider 20 with an outer ring 21 secured to the interior of the fan casing 28, and an inner ring 23 secured about the housing 22 of an electric motor 24 which drives an impeller 44. The shutter plates 64 are pivotally mounted on the axles 62 and in the lower half of the device carry counterweights 66 to ensure proper closure of the plates. Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, one T-member comprising a stem 58 and a bar 60 is each secured to a radial arm 30 of the spider 20. Each T-member is formed with a projection 70, and a ring 72 guided by a number of ribs 41 on the exterior face of a frame 40 of the shutter device is free to move over these projections. The ring 72 carries a pair of spaced abutments 74 and 76 which are adapted to coact with a cam member 78 on each shutter plate 64. The angular position of the ring 72 can be changed manually by pulling either of two cords 82. In Figs. 5 and 6, the plate 64 is in the closed position and is locked there by the abutment 76 engaging the cam 78. Two other positions of the ring 72 show the abutment 74 engaging the cam 78 with the plate 64 locked in an open position, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), and a position when the cam 78 is clear of the two abutments 74 and 76 and the shutter plate 64 is free to react automatically to air pressure changes, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 11 to 16 (not shown), the shutter plates can be locked in a fully open position for one extreme movement of the ring 72, and at the other extreme, the shutter reacts automatically to air pressure changes. In an alternative embodiment (not illustrated) the shutter plates are pivoted about radial axes offset with respect to the radial axis of symmetry of each plate. Specification 910,475 is referred to.
