Abstract

910,127. Centrifugal pumps. VAUGHAN, J. E. July 11, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 25140/61. Class 110 (1). A submersible centrifugal pump comprises impeller blades 6 each having a horizontal flange 23 projecting from the leading free of the blade, the leading edge 22 of the flange being bent downward and ground so that its undersurface is parallel to the lower end plate 8 of the pump casing. Any stringy material, such as hay, straw, paper or rags, contained in the liquid entering the pump through inlet openings 9 is chopped up by the shearing action between the edges 22 and the openings 9. For this purpose, the edge of each opening 9 at the end towards which the blades 6 move is ground at an angle to the vertical.
