Class 110(1) A centrifugal pump for handling contaminated liquid without clogging comprises a pump casing having a relatively large inlet port communicating directly with an impeller chamber, the latter being surrounded by a generally spiral discharge channel, a cover for the casing on the side opposite the inlet port and having an opening for the pump shaft, and an impeller comprising a substantially imperforate member spaced from the cover and carrying blades which are arranged with their inlet edges adjacent the inlet port, contaminating matter in the liquid entering the inlet port being directly exposed to the comminuting action of the blades. The pump casing 12 is detachably supported by a cover 42 which is welded to a tubular support 16 depending from a cover 44 for the tank containing the liquid to be pumped. Impeller blades 30 are mounted on a disc 32 at an agle of 70 degrees to the radial direction. with their inner edges 28 in alignment with the 'sharp edge 31 of an intake opening formed in a conical member 52. The outer wall 38 of the casing 12 is of approximately involute shape. Blades 62 on the back of disc 32 reduce leakage around the shaft 14 into the support 16. Any leakage escapes through holes 64, which are preferably located below the liquid level. The shaft 14 is journalled in a ball bearing 60 carried by the cover 44 and a ball bearing 66 carried by a support 70. The pump is driven through V-belts 73 by a motor 76 which may be mounted on the cover 44: reduction gearing or direct drive may be used instead. Seals may be provided below the bearing 60. Solid matter tending to clog the pump is comminuted by the blade's 30 and 62; the sharp edge 31 assists the action of the former.
