905,352. Semi-conductor devices. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 4, 1959 [Feb. 7, 1958], No. 3948/59. Class 37. Electrode bodies to be alloyed to a semiconductor material during the manufacture of a semi-conductor device are held in position by associating with them ferro-magnetic materials, for example by enveloping, mixing, alloying with the electrode or by placing magnetic inserts in the assembly jig so that the electrodes may be urged magnetically into contact with the semi-conductor. As shown in Fig. 1, electrode bodies 6 which may be pellets of indium coated with iron are attracted towards the N-type germanium 3 to which they are to be fixed by magnets 5 which may be pointed so as to locate the magnetic inserts accurately. In Fig. 3, the electrode inserts 17 and a plug 18 of magnetic material are held by a magnetized insert 16 so that the jig can be converted to allow insertion of a non-magnetic electrode body in a hole in insert 16. In further arrangements (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) permanently magnetized plugs attract each other or an electromagnetic field may force plugs of magnetic material together to hold the electrode inserts in contact with the electrode body.
