A skip with flexible walls 20 (Fig. 4) has upper and lower openings provided with closures. The lower closure shown in Fig. 5 comprises plates 38 hinged to a ring structure 50 and formed with bolts 42 which can be withdrawn from a central boss 43 by ties terminating in handles 47. Removable struts 35 space the lower ring 50 from a corresponding upper ring 31 (Fig. 4). Agitators 48 (Fig. 5) can be operated from outside the skip by handles 49. The skip is suspended from eyes 28 on cables 27 threaded through tunnels 25 in a web 24 secured through a reinforcing ring 22 to the wall 20. Bands 23 also reinforce the walls 20 which may be confined by an outside net or a system of ties. Pins 51 on the ring 50 permit a bayonet-slot connection either to a similar skip below or to the upper edge of a shoot which may be provided with a metering valve. A further closure may be secured below the plates 38 by pins engaging the ring 50, and may carry lugs engaging lugs on the bolts 42 to prevent these being withdrawn. In an alternative arrangement the skip is suspended by a yoke 73 (Fig. 8) connected by hook bolts 72 to brackets 71 on an upper ring 61, 62 secured to the wall of the skip. The hook bolts 72 are engaged with the brackets 71 by rotation of the yoke 73, and are then locked by pins 74a, as shown in Fig. 9. Beneath the yoke 73 is a lid 67 hinged at 65 to the ring 61. A closure 70 secured to the inside of the lid 67 by a wing nut 69 may house a strap for binding the top and bottom of the skip together when the skip is out of use. Links 89 on the ring 61 may engage hooks on the bottom ring when the skip is thus collapsed.
