Abstract

902,408. Section insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. March 13, 1959 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 38802/57. Class 36. The runners of a section insulator, of the kind having a massive insulator body, are yieldably supported relative to the massive body so that they can yield to upthrust from the pantograph without imparting lift to the body. A section insulator comprises a tension insulator 9 and a compression insulator 12, each pivotally connected at their ends to L-shaped end members 5 and 6 to which the ends of the contact wire 4 are clamped. The " approach" runners 18 and " departure " runners 22 are each clamped to a section of the contact wire by means of a fitting 19, Fig. 5 (and Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), which includes a cross-arm 39 which clamps the T-section runners and which pivots, on the portion of the fitting clamped to the contact wire, by means of a pin 42 in a bearing 37 mounted in a synthetic rubber bush 38. This resilient bearing thus permits both rocking movement and yielding movement to take place. The divergent arms of runners 18 are clamped at the ends of bracket arms 21 which are resiliently pivoted to the end fitting 6 whilst the arms of runners 22 diverge and then converge and are clamped along arms 56 carried on a fitting resiliently pivoted to the end fitting 5. The compression insulator 12 is rotatably mounted in thrust bearings and is connected at each end by pairs of rods 70 and 92 to the pivoted arms 21 and 56 carrying the runners, so that tilting of one pair of runners about the axis of the insulator is transmitted, by rotation of the insulator 12, to the other pair of runners. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 14 and 15, not shown), this mutual tilting is effected by hydraulic links, whilst vertical yielding of the runners relative to the insulator body is permitted by mounting the pivoted brackets in spring-loaded guides and vertical movement of a bracket at one end is imparted to that at the other by means of links which rotate the insulator body. A further embodiment (Fig. 16 and 17, not shown) utilizes this latter method of effecting vertical lift of the runners but includes a third, rotatable, insulator body which is used in conjunction with rods, as in the first embodiment, to effect mutual tilting. Specification 902,409 is referred to.
