Apparatus for use in paying-out a cable, rope or hose from a drum comprises a base-plate 1, a post 2 secured to and upstanding substantially at right angles to the base-plate 1, at least three carriages 10 for supporting the drum, each comprising one or more wheels 11 running on the base-plate, and means for constraining each carriage to move in a circular path concentric with the post 2. The carriages 10 are preferably mounted on the outer ends of arms 5 which are secured to a common bearing 4. The arms 5 comprise two parts which are secured together by bolts for other means so that the carriages are adjustable relative to the post 2 for accommodating drums of various diameters.
