918,631. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Sept. 25, 1961 [Sept. 26, 1960], No. 33072/60. Class 36. [Also in Group XXX] An insulator for supporting an electric conductor or conductors comprises an elongated metal member which forms the principal structural part of the insulator, an insulating rod, tube or like member attached at one end, supporting means for the conductor or conductors attached directly or indirectly to the other end and an insulating covering which extends over a substantial length of the metal member and a neighbouring part of the insulating member to augment the surface leakage path across the insulating member. In an embodiment for supporting a pair of contact wires for an overhead electric traction system the metal number is a hollow tube 1 to which is attached by adhesives or compression joints a fibre glass rod 2 which supports a support 4 for the contact wires 6, 7 by means of a shorter metal tube 3. The insulator is covered over its whole length with a layer of P.T.F.E. to resist tracking. The structure may rotate about a vertical axis 14 and the movement about a horizontal pivot 11 is restricted by two nuts 18, 20 separated by an interchangeable sleeve 21. The P.T.F.E.- covered insulating rod and metal tube structure may also be used as the strut in a conventional cantilever support with an insulating tie-rod at its upper end.
