Abstract
878,073. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. April 22, 1959 [April 23, 1958], No. 12906/58. Class 36. An insulator comprises an elongated body 1, of resin-bonded glass or other high-tensile inorganic fibres, a part between its terminal fittings 2 and 3 being enclosed in a waterproof covering built up of a plurality of tubular bodies 5 of ceramic or vitreous material. The tubular bodies may be a sliding or a loose fit and either an elastomeric sleeve or insulating grease may be interposed in the space 6 between the body 1 and the bodies 5, or this may be left as air space, tightly fitting washers 7 being interposed between the tubular bodies 5 and at the ends of the covering, these washers being of copper, P.T.F.E. or other elastomeric material, and the assembly being held in compression either by springs or by pretensioning the glass fibre body whilst assembling the covering thereon. The tubular bodies 5 may be provided with circumferential ribs to increase the leakage path, or adjacent sections may be of differing diameters. Alternatively (Fig. 5) they may be provided with shrouds 10 which overlap the joints 11 between adjacent bodies 5. The end fittings 2 are preferably compression fittings.
