Abstract
1,048,434. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. March 3, 1965 [March 4, 1964], No. 9147/64. Addition to 813,818. Heading H2C. The insulator comprises sheds of, for example, one of the types 2, 3, 4 shown attached by adhesive to a rigid tube 1 of resin-bonded inorganic fibres such as glass fibre and provided with supports 6, 10, for the insulator and for the conductor which are independent of the sheds. The tube may be of longitudinal fibres or a combination of such fibres and lapped tapes. The conductor support 6 and the insulator support 10 may be of insulating or conducting material and may both consist of a boss 7 fitting loosely in the end of the tube, the space between the cap and tube being filled with an epoxy resin. The sheds may be of non-tracking rubbers, for example butyl rubber and ethylene propylene copolymers or they may be of a resinbonded glass fibre material dough-moulded in situ. The tube may be filled with polyurethane or silicone elastomer foam; it may house a lightning arrester element or a spark gap, connections being made through the tube itself. The resin used in the tube manufacture may be coated with a non-tracking material such as silicone rubber.
