Abstract
876,507. Insulators; cable terminations; stress distributing devices. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd. Jan. 10, 1958 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 1056/57. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A stress distributing device for a cable joint or termination comprises an annular insulating body of synthetic resin material incorporated within the wall of which is a concentric, flexible walled, stress ring. As shown, the stress ring 6 is either of lead or an elastomeric material at least the skin of which is conducting, e.g. has a coating of metal, or conducting elastomeric material. The ring is charged with gas under pressure 7 during moulding of the insulation and the gas is only partly released afterwards. In an alternative arrangement the ring comprises expanded elastomeric material, again either wholly conducting or with a conducting skin. Electrical connections may be moulded in the insulation, and one may also form a gas filling tube, or the insulation may be tapped for a connecting screw.
