877,055. Insulators, cable terminations; cable joints; SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 4486/58. Drawings to Specification. Classes 36 and 38 (1). Insulating members for use in high-voltage cable straight joints, sealing ends or as bushing insulators consist of thermosetting or coldsetting cast synthetic resin having embedded therein a conductive or weakly conductive insert for potential control the insert having air or gas-filled cavities rendering it compressible and/or expansible. The resin may be polyester or epoxy based and the insert may be conducting or weakly-conducting foam rubber, or may be weakly conducting paper, textile, or other fibrous material, which may be a covering on a rigid, e.g. metal, body, it being essential that the resin does not fill up the air cavities when the insert is embedded. A metal stress ring may be thus covered and embedded in resin to form part of a straight joint or. sealing end, constructions of these being described (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). Channels may be provided in the resin body so that when the member is used with oil-filled apparatus the oil may at least partially impregnate the insert. In a bushing insulator through which a bare conductor passes, the conductor may also be provided with a covering of the same or a similar conductive material as the insert (Fig. 3, not shown).
