Abstract

800,980. Suspending cables. FRASER, H., and CANTLAY, W. G. Dec. 13, 1956 [June 19, 1956], No. 18957/56. Class 36. A cable is suspended from the insulator of a transmission tower by a two-part device, the upper part 11 being pivotally secured to the insulator, and the lower pent 10 carrying the cable and being supported by the upper part, the two parts being normally held together by a locking device which yields if the pivotal movement exceeds a predetermined extent which will occur if the cable breaks at one side of the device. The lower part 10 comprises a cable clamp 12, 13, two upright lugs 14, lugs 15a formed on the lower end of a suspender 15 and a pin 16 passing through the lugs, which have interfitting projections 17 and recesses 18 to prevent relative rotation. At its upper end the suspender 15 carries two rollers 19 mounted on a pin 20. The upper part 11 is pivotally attached to the insulator and comprises an open-ended housing 26 provided with a pair of curved tracks 22 on which the rollers 19 rest. A transverse pivotpin 23 fits within a slot at the top of suspender 15 which enables the suspender to swivel and the rollers to move along the tracks. A shear pin 25 passes through the suspender 15 and a pair of lugs 24a on the housing 26. Normally the rollers rest centrally on the tracks, but if the cable breaks there is a sudden pull on the cable to one side of the clamp, resulting in the suspender 15 pivoting about the pin 23, causing the pin 25 to shear. The rollers then move along the tracks and pass off the ends of the tracks and through the end of the housing 26, when the suspender 15 complete with clamp and cable will fall to the ground. In a modification the tracks are formed in the upper part of the housing, which is embodied in the lower part 10, the tracks bearing on the rollers which are pinned to the upper part 11.
