896,790. Attaching sleeves to spinning &c. spindles. TOYO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA and NIHON SPINDLE SEIZO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5968/59. Class 120(2) To support a sleeve on a spinning &c. spindle, the top of the spindle is fitted with a tip 4 having a cam 7 with guide surfaces along which members, such as rollers or balls 8, can rotate while moving towards or away from the sleeve according to their positions on the surfaces. The cam surface has portions of steep and gentle inclination 5, 6, and recesses. Cam 5, 6 and the balls &c. are held by a retainer 9 which may have friction members 13 or otherwise be partly or wholly in contact with the inner surface of the sleeve. When the spindle starts to rotate, the cam 7 forces the balls into contact with the sleeve; when the spindle slows to a stop, the continued rotation of the sleeve causes the balls to move on to the shallow parts of the can surface to force the balls against the sleeve and bring it to rest. When the sleeve is to be removed, the balls move into the recesses in the cam-surface. The cam may be integral with the spindle, and resilient means may be provided to reduce the impact between the cam and the balls on starting and stopping. The arrangement permits the use of a short and narrow spindle.
