A machine for folding sheets of material comprises a table 1 for supporting the sheet 15 to be folded, a belt assembly for delivering the sheet to the table, a movable folding knife 4 initiating the folding of the sheet and co-operating with rollers 5, 6 which complete the folding and withdrawal of the sheet, stop-means 2 and an adjustable device 3 for squaring up the sheet against the stop means and means 7 disposed in the path of introduction of the sheets for guiding the latter on to the table in the longitudinal direction of the longitudinal knife 4 in such a manner that each consecutive sheet runs on to the table over a preceding sheet during folding of the latter immediately after the folding knife has cleared the path of introduction of the sheets. The guide means 7 may be oscillated by being connected with the drive of the machine. In other embodiments the guide means is constituted by a stepped-up portion disposed in a plane lying above the plane of table 1 ; by reciprocally sliding members, by rotating members and by suction and/or blowing means.
