Abstract
1,167,327. Folding machines. LEIPZIGER BUCHBINDEREIMASCHINENWERKE, VEB. 18 Nov., 1966, No. 51797/66. Heading B8R. In a knife folding machine for forming three or four folds in a sheet the third fold may be provided selectively in an upward or downward direction with reference to the plane in which the sheet is fed, by two parallel pairs of folding rollers and their associated folding knives, one roller pair being disposed above and the other pair below the sheet feed plane, the pairs being spaced in the direction of the plane. A sheet fed in direction A receives a first fold from a mechanism comprising rollers 1 and folding knife 2, and is then conveyed by a belt track to a second folding device comprising rollers 6 and knife 7. Sheet transport track 17 then conveys the sheet to a third folding mechanism which in a first embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a first pair of rollers 11 with a folding knife 12, a second pair of rollers 13 with a folding knife 14, sheet stops 15 and a drawing device 16. Beneath this folding mechanism the sheet enters a sheet delivery device 19 or passes to the right on a sheet, transport track 20 to a fourth folding mechanism. Sheet feed track 17 forms within the third folding mechanism sheet feed plane 27. A sheet 18 is guided by knife 12 between rollers 11, and then by way of a sheet transport bridge consisting of rollers 28 guide plates 29 and deflector 30, between rollers 13 whose associated knife 14 is stationary and then by way of adjustable sheet guide 31 either to the delivery system 19 or the fourth folding mechanism. For a downward fold in sheet 18, sheet stops 8 are displaced a distance a to the right, 8<SP>1</SP>, so that the sheet arrives in the feed plane 27 with its centre beneath folding knife 14 which drives sheet 18 between rollers 13 to guide 31 as above. During this operation folding knife 12 is inoperative. In a second embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4) when the upward folding knife 12 is in use the sheet transport bridge is positioned between the raised inoperative knife 14 and its associated folding rollers 13, the folding rollers 11 and the sheet transport bridge being displaceable out of the path of knife 14 and parallel to the sheet feed plane when a downward fold is required. In a third embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6) the path of descent of knife 14 is blocked as above when knife 12 is in use but in this case just the sheet transfer bridge is mounted such that it may be moved out of this path when a downward fold is required. In a fourth embodiment (Figs. 7 and 8) the folding knives are mounted vertically in line with each other, one above and one below sheet feedplane 27 and the associated folding rollers are mounted for horizontal sliding movement in opposite directions, longitudinally of the feed plane such that either the one or the other pair is brought into alignment with its folding blade according to the direction of fold required.
