Abstract
980,535. Delivering sheets. SMITH & WINCHESTER MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 5, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No. 4613/63. Heading B6H. A web is fed over an electronic flaw detector to longitudinal slitters and between feed rollers to a transverse rotary cutter 26, Fig. 2, the relative speed of the latter and the rollers being adjusted according to the desired sheet length. The sheets are then passed between rapid tapes 28, 30 and 32, 30, past a sensing device 34 and over a table 40 to slow tapes 42, through feed rollers 44, 46 to a stack. Faulty sheets detected by the flaw detector are diverted by fingers 64, Figs. 2 and 3, actuated individually or in groups by solenoids 63, between tapes 68, 72, past a sensing device 34a and over a table 40a to slow tapes and a second stack. The table 40 has an opening 54 periodically aligned with an opening 52 in a roller 48 connected to a source of suction so as to slow down the sheet, which is fed over the table arrested by compressed air directed through an aperture 58. When a sheet is diverted, a longer gap occurs between sheets passing the sensing device 34, and suction is applied to the aperture 58 by means of a valve 62 to act on the trailing edge of a sheet and hold it stationary until the following sheet is overlapping. The apparatus 40a, 48a, 62a acts similarly on the diverted sheets. The apparatus is also repeated laterally to deal with the separate series of sheets cut from the web strips produced by the slitters.
