Abstract

920,743. Box making machines. UNIVERSAL CORRUGATED BOX MACHINERY CORPORATION. June 23, 1959 [July 1, 1958], No. 21525/59. Class 18. In a machine for folding the blank shown in Fig. 9 so that panels A, D are adjacent and are secured by an adhesive tab 28, means are provided to ensure that a uniform gap is obtained between the adjacent edges of panels A and D and to ensure that the blank is held square as it passes along a conveyer. The blanks are stacked, as described in Specification 920,744 above a perforated conveyer belt and are held there against by suction, a gauge arm allowing only one blank at a time to pass to a pair of feed rolls 87 (Fig. 1). Guide members 65, 65<SP>11</SP> located the blanks transversely. A handwheel 48 enables the right hand end 52 of the magazine for the blanks to be adjustable to accommodate blanks of various sizes. From the rolls 87 the blanks pass to a pair of belts 105 and are held thereon by rolls 114 (Fig. 17) which are adjustable to suit blanks of various thicknesses. The panels A, D are folded by further belts 138, 139 passing round pulleys 141, 101 and round conical pulleys 147 which cause the belts to twist. One roller 147 is set in advance of the other so that panel A folds before panel D. Adhesive has previously been applied to the tab 28 by a gluing device 117. The means ensuring that there is the correct gap between adjacent edges of panels A and D comprises bevelled wheels 132 carried by a plate 128 (Fig. 17), these wheels press the blank down on to the conveyer belts 105 and also rotate as the blanks pass along so that there is no tendency for the blanks to be drawn out of line on the conveyer which would cause incorrect folding. After folding, the blank is carried between the belts beneath rolls 148, 148<SP>1</SP> which press the belts together and crushing rolls 155 soften the folded edges of the blank. Finally the blanks are discharged from the left-hand end of the machine (Fig. 1). Specification 832,733 also is referred to.
