Abstract

1365112 Feeding, folding and delivering sheets J A LONG 3 Sept 1971 [1 July 1971] 41142/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division B6] A device for scoring a card such as a greeting card comprises a circular knife 100 mounted on a shaft 102, a counter roller 118 on shaft 122 mounted on a heavy base 136 for rigidity and movable to adjust the gap between the knife and counter roller, and rollers 140, 152 to move the card through said gap, said shafts 102, 122 being preloaded in bearings 113, 129, respectively to improve rigidity. The counter roller is movable by cam means 132 movable by screw 138. The feed rolls 140 are driven in synchronism with the knife 100 by the gearing 112. Cards are fed one at a time from a container 30 having an adjustably positioned profiled back plate 61 which shuffles the trailing edges of the cards, and a wheel 70 driven to direct light cards downwardly to the adjustable gate 34, 36. Drive to the wheel 70 is discontinued for heavy cards. The conveyer 26 delivers each card to an aligning unit (12), Fig. 1a (not shown), comprising conveyer bands (84) wherein rollers (86), Fig. 3 (not shown), bias the guides towards a flange (90). From the aligning unit the cards enter the scoring unit described above and are delivered therefrom to a folding unit 16, Fig 1b and Figs. 1a, 5-7 (not shown), comprising endless bands which are roller oriented to fold a scored card over on itself. From here the folded cards travel to a stacking unit 18, Fig. 1b, preferably comprising two sets of endless bands 224, 226 which carry the cards to one or the other of two stacks on lateral conveyer (248), Fig. 4b (not shown), operated intermittently through a photo-electric device and counter as directed by air jets from nozzles 244 valved to operate alternately on a predetermined cycle by a counter controlled by the photo-electric device 241, 242. The cards passing through the photo-electric beam causes the said sets of bands to be driven only when the beam is interrupted, whereby the cards are overlapped on the bands.
