Abstract

1,205,847. Box-making machine. SUNDS A.B. 26 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14549/68. Heading B5D. [Also in Divisions B6 and B8] A machine for making flat folded adhesively secured box blanks consists of sections for feeding 10, Fig. 1, printing 14, 16, slotting, taping and trimming 18, folding 20 and delivery 22, powered by a drive shaft 52 and electric motors. The blanks 12 are fed in by a conveyer belt (176), Fig. 4 (not shown), or kicker 58, Fig. 2, and each operation is performed on the moving blank as it passes through the machine on perforated conveyer belts 70, 326. The conveyer belts 70, 326 form one face of chambers 200, Fig. 6, 130, Fig. 15, running along the machine and attached to the suction side of a fan, so that the blanks are held against the belts. The trimming knives 232, 276, Fig. 2, creasing knives 248, 292, 278 and slotting knives (308, 310), Fig. 11 (not shown), a baffle (212), Fig. 7 (not shown), in the printing section suction' chamber 200, and a bar 360 and belt 326 in the folding section are capable of lateral movements to accommodate different sized blanks. These adjustments are made with screw and sleeve mechanisms, some of which are linked by sprockets and chains for synchronous and equal movement. Folding of the blank flaps to 90 is performed by the bars 360 which slope inwardly and downwardly and completed to 180 degrees by the belts 362 which are twisted. During folding, the blanks 12 are held by suction to the underside of the conveyer belt 326, Fig. 15, which is supported by a U-shaped frame member 130 acting also as a suction chamber. Adhesive tape is dispensed in appropriate lengths from a taping wheel 234, Fig. 2, during the trimming, creasing and slotting operations. The folded blank is squared by being engaged between a fixed plate 372 and a reciprocating plate (376), Fig. 18 (not shown), and delivered from the machine under a pressure hold-down mechanism 138 to enable the adhesive to set.
