Abstract
892,466. Tone controlling; volume expansion. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. April 29, 1958 [April 30, 1957], No. 13501/58. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] A tone-control system comprises switching means for effecting different tone adjustments, said switching means also controlling the contrast expansion. As shown, the incoming signal after amplification at 1 is applied to a potentiometer comprising resistor 3 (and possibly 4) in series with the anode cathode path of valve 6 whose conductivity is varied in accordance with the amplitude of the output signal from valve 1, which is amplified, rectified and applied in a negative sense to the grid of the valve 6. The signal thus expanded is applied to an amplifier 19, 20 whose feed-back path is provided with four-position ganged tone control switches 24, 25, 26 to produce the various tone conditions. Ganged to these switches are switches 16, 17 arranged to change the contrast expansion conditions. Thus, switch 16 either includes or omits resistor 4 from the potentiometer comprising resistance 3 and the variable impedance of the valve 6, so varying the degree of contrast expansion. Switch 17 controls the value of the potential applied to the grid of the valve 6 and hence the value at which the valve 6 cuts-off, i.e. the value of the input signal at which contrast expansion ceases. The switches may be replaced by four pushbuttons. The invention may be applied to radio-receiving apparatus or reproducing apparatus.
