Abstract

811,753. Automatic gain control. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 16, 1957 [Sept. 14, 1956], No. 28104/56. Class 40 (5). In a volume compressor comprising a pair of pentode valves V1, V2, in which the signal is applied to the control grid and taken from the anode circuit of the first valve V1, and in which the screen grid of each valve is connected to the anode of the other and the gain control voltage is applied to the suppressor grids A of both valves, an out-of-phase signal is applied to the control grid of the second valve V2 to reduce distortion when the gain is considerably reduced. The arrangement also increases the effectiveness of the control. As shown, the output from the anode circuit of the valve V1 is applied to a further amplifier V3 which feeds an output transformer 24, the output being taken from winding 25 and tertiary winding 26 supplying the out-of-phase voltage to the grid of valve V2, via potentiometer 27. The gain control voltage is derived from the input via amplifier 30 and rectifier V4, which is provided with a delay bias at terminal B. The working point of the valves V1, V2 is stabilized by means of a common cathode resistor 11. In a push-pull embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) in which the valves V1, V2 are duplicated by a second pair driven in opposite phase the out-of-phase voltage required for each pair of valves is derived from the input to the corresponding opposite side of the amplifier.
