Abstract

739,449. Valve amplifying circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 23, 1953], No. 5133/54. Class 40 (6). An amplifier for operation direct from A.C. supply comprises one or more screen-grid valves with A.C. applied to both the gridcathode and anode-cathode circuits in such manner that in the absence of a signal on the control grid the anode current is substantially zero at any instant. In order to amplify throughout the mains supply cycle, three parallel-connected push-pull pairs of valves are used with their H.T. terminals 16, 161, 16<SP>11</SP> respectively connected to the phases of a threephase supply. In each pair 3, 4 the screens are connected directly to the H.T. terminal 16 &c. and the cathodes taken to a tap on an autotransformer 8, 9 such that the valves are normally always cut off in the absence of a signal. Signals to be amplified are applied to the grids in push-pull over rectifiers 14, 15 which prevent distortion due to grid current occurring. The cathode circuit is decoupled for signal frequencies by a condenser 17. The arrangement may be modified for amplifying direct currents.
