Abstract

896,798. Automatic gain control. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 19, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26637/58. Class 40(5). In a radio receiver an A.G.C. voltage is applied from line 7 to the signal grid of a pentode I.F. amplifier 14 which is provided with an un-bypassed cathode resistor 8 to prevent detuning due to change of input capacity as the grid bias is varied. The A.G.C. voltage for R.F. stages 2 is delayed, being applied from line 18 via resistor 11 to the suppressor grid of valve 14 which is connected to a fixed positive potential via a resistor 10 and acts as a delay diode. The delayed A.G.C. voltage is applied to R.F. stages 2 via line 4. To prevent the application of a positive grid bias to the R.F. stages 2 before the delayed A.G.C. comes into operation, the cathode of the valve 14 is earthed for D.C. by means of a choke 9 of low D.C. resistance and whose A.C. shunting effect on resistor 8 is negligible. The earlier I.F. stages may also be controlled by the delayed A.G.C. voltage. If the valve 14 has more than three grids, a grid other than the third may be used as a delay diode; alternatively a screen surrounding the electrode system of the valve may be used.
