Abstract

952,904. Gain control. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS-G.m.b.H. June 8, 1961 [June 9, 1960], No. 20746/61. Headings H3Q, H3T and H4R. In a transistor amplifier the gain is controlled by means of a further transistor 13, Fig. 1, the collector-emitter path of which shunts the base bias resistor 5 of the amplifying transistor 6. The gain controlling voltage is applied to the base of the further transistor 13, the collectoremitter path impedance of which is reduced by means of collector to base negative feed-back over resistor 14, which may be adjustable, and blocking capacitor 15. The arrangement is such that as the current through the further transistor 13 is varied it both varies gain by variation of the base bias on the amplifying transistor 6 and by forming a variable impedance A.C. shunt upon the input, controlling the signal applied to the base of amplifying transistor 6. To enable the gain to be reduced to zero, there is included in series with the emitter bias resistor 9 of the amplifying transistor 6 a biasing source 16. In an alternative embodiment the further transistor 13, Fig. 2, is used to vary the emitter bias of and also the negative feed-back around, the amplifying transistor 6. To this end its collector-emitter path is included in the emitter circuit of the amplifying transistor 6 in series with bias resistor 9. Negative feed-back is again applied to the further transistor 13 by means of adjustable resistor 14 and D.C, blocking capacitor 15. Resistor 19 permits collector current to flow in the further transistor 13 even when the amplifying transistor 6 is biased to cut-off. It is stated in the Specification that the invention may also be applied to circuits employing thermionic valves.
