Abstract

885,811. Transistor amplifying circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 22, 1959], No. 35855/60. Class 40(6). A gain control arrangement comprises a pair of transistors with a common emitter resistance 3 and with the signal applied to the bases of both. A gain-controlling current is applied to the base of the first transistor 1 and the signal is taken from the collector circuit of the other, across a resistor 6; the base potential of this transistor is maintained constant by means of a potentiometer 7, 8. In addition a self-bias resistor 10 decoupled by condenser 9 may be placed in the emitter lead; this is stated to allow of a lower value to be assigned to resistors 7, 8 thus improving the thermal stability of transistor 2. The arrangement is such that an increase in the control current to the base of the transistor 1 increases the D.C. voltage across resistor 3, so biasing transistor 2 back to a region of lesser gain, and at the same time increase in gain of transistor 1 produces a larger signal across resistor 3, so reducing the signal between base and emitter of transistor 2.
