Abstract

892,143. Generating combustion products under pressure. LALONDE, R. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 20, 1958], No. 2058/59. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A combustion gas generator comprises a rotor having a plurality of combustion chambers and a non-rotary means of leading gas to and from the combustion chambers, air under pressure supplied to one chamber being further compressed by means of pressure developed in a second chamber in which combustion is taking place. The gas generator shown comprises a rotary assembly of five combustion chambers 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 mounted on a shaft 71 by means of support plates 69, 70 and having end plates 67, 68. The rotary assembly is supported within a cylindrical shell 43 having end closure plates 44, 45 with which the rotor assembly end-plates 67, 68 engage. The endplate 44 has two ports 47, 48, air under pressure from a compressor 75 being led through duct 49 to the port 47, while the port 48 is covered by a cap 50 having a fuel injection device 51 and an igniter 52. The end-plate 45 has five ports 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, the port 53 being a discharge port for high-pressure combustion gases, port 54 a discharge port for low-pressure combustion gases, 55 a scavenging port, and the ports 56 and 57 being interconnected by a duct 61. In the first position of a combustion chamber, say 65, air under pressure from the duct 49 blows through the chamber which is open to the scavenging duct 60 at its other end. In the second position of the chamber it is open to the interconnector duct 61, so that air or gases under pressure in the preceding chamber which is in full combustion act through the interconnector duct to further compress the air in the chamber 65. In the next position of the chamber 65 it is aligned with the cap 50, fuel is injected through injector 51 and combustion initiated by igniter 52, the resulting gases acting through the interconnector duct 61 to compress the air in the following chamber. In the next position, the chamber 65 is opened to the high-pressure discharge duct 58 and the gases pass to the gas-turbine 74 which drives the compressor 75, while in the final position, the chamber is opened to the low-pressure gas-discharge duct 59 and the gases pass to the gas-turbine 74 or to another point of use.
