Abstract

Before being coated with metal by the thermal decomposition of a gaseous metal-bearing compound, a continuously moving metal base is heated and subjected to sub-atmospheric pressure in order to degasify it. In the specific embodiment, a metal strip (e.g. of steel, aluminium or copper) is cleaned, dried by a hot air blast, and then passed through three chambers in which it is respectively heated, subjected to sub-atmospheric pressure (e.g. in an atmosphere of nitrogen, helium or carbon dioxide), and coated with metal. The coated strip may then be optionally heat-treated. Thermally decomposable metal compounds which may be used are carbonyls e.g. of nickel, iron, chromium, molybdenum or cobalt; cobalt nitrosyl carbonyl; osmium carbonyl bromide or ruthenium carbonyl chloride; copper nitroxyl; antimony hydride or tin hydride; chromyl chloride; and metal alkyls.
