Abstract

873,429. Coating with metals. CLARKSON, A H. (Commonwealth Engineering Co. of Ohio). Nov. 8, 1957, No. 34818/57. Class 82(2) Elongated heat-insulating material is metallized by first heating it by radiation to the decomposition temperature of a heat-decomposable metal-bearing compound and then contacting it with such a compound. As shown, glass or synthetic organic fibres or filaments 37 are metallized by being drawn from reel 35 to take-up reel 41 through apparatus comprising insulating bodies 1, 3. Slots 9 in body 1 are provided with metal strips 11 which are inductively heated by heaters 7. Slots 17 alternate with slots 9 and are provided with metal-bearing gas through conduits 19. Fibres 37 are therefore alternately heated by radiation from strips 11 as they pass over slots 9, and metallized as they pass over slots 17. Specified metal-bearing gases are the carbonyls of nickel, iron, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and cobalt, copper nitroxyl, cobalt nitrosyl carbonyl, antimony and tin hydrides, chromyl chloride, osmium carbonyl bromide and ruthenium carbonyl chloride.
