Abstract
<PICT:0902682/III/1> <PICT:0902682/III/2> <PICT:0902682/III/3> <PICT:0902682/III/4> <PICT:0902682/III/5> A chemical reactor for the production of fluorinated ethylenes (see Group IV(b) ) has a reaction zone which is slit-shaped. In the forms of reactor shown, Fig. 1: the tube a is concentric with tube b, forming reaction zone d; c is a heating jacket. The apparatus may be of any cross-section, e.g. circular (Fig. 2), rectangular (Fig. 3) or elliptical; or the reaction zone may be on one side of the inlet tube only, as in Figs. 4 and 5. Specifications 723,715 and 823,998 are referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0902682/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0902682/IV (b)/2> Fluorinated ethylenes are prepared by pyrolysing a compound RCF2Cl, where R is hydrogen, methyl, or halomethyl containing at least one hydrogen atom, in a reaction zone which has a slit-shaped cross-section, and one wall of which is heated, and the opposite wall is cooled by the gaseous starting material flowing along the outer surface of the wall before it enters the reaction zone. In the suitable forms of apparatus shown, the tube a (Fig. 1), which may be of any cross-section, e.g. circular, elliptical or rectangular, is concentric with tube b, which is heated by jacket c; the reaction zone is the space d; or the reaction zone may be on one side of the inlet tube only, as in Fig. 4. A dehydrohalogenation catalyst, such as a platinum metal or an alloy thereof may be used. Specified reactions are the conversion of CHF2Cl to CF2:CF2 at 650-900 DEG C., of CH3CF2Cl to CH2:CF2 at 650-900 DEG C., of CHCl2CF2Cl to CCl2:CF2 at 200-600 DEG C., of CHF2CF2Cl to CF2:CF2 at 600-1000 DEG C., and of CHFClCF2Cl to CFCl:CF2.
