Abstract
Perfluoropropene is made by pyrolysis of a mixture of difluorochloromethane and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoro-2-chloro-ethane at a temperature above 500 DEG C. in a reactor which has previously been rinsed with an inert gas. The inert gas is defined as one which does not react with the starting materials or products at the pyrolysis temperature. It is preferred to use the reactants in equimolar proportions and to effect the rinsing of the reactor at the pyrolysis temperature, which is preferably 750-850 DEG C. The reaction can be effected in steel, nickel, silver or platinum tubes or in a quartz tube over a platinum contact. In the examples, some perfluoroethylene and trifluorochloroethylene are obtained as by-products.
