Abstract
The invention comprises 1,1-difluoroallene and a process of preparing a difluoro-olefine which comprises pyrolysing, within the temperature range 600-100 DEG C., a tetrafluorocyclobutane containing from 4 to 17 carbon atoms and having the formula: <FORM:0778750/IV(b)/1> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen or monovalent hydrocarbon radicals containing up to 8 carbon atoms and free from non-aromatic unsaturation or, when taken together, a divalent hydrocarbon radical whose two free valencies stem from the same carbon atom. The preferred temperature range for the reaction is 750-900 DEG C. Examples describe the production of b ,b - difluorostyrene (with some 1,2- and 2,3 - difluoronaphthalene), vinylidene fluoride and 1,1-difluoropropylene (with some tetrafluoroethylene), 1,1 - difluoroisobutylene, 2 - methyl - 3 - chloro - 3,3 - difluoro - propene - 1, 1,1 - difluoroallene, 1,2,3 - tribromo - 3,3 - difluoro - 1 - propene and 1,1 - difluoro-octene - 1. b ,b - Difluorostyrene can be reacted with potassium cyanide to form b -cyano-b -fluorostyrene. 1,1-Difluoroallene can be reacted with acrylonitrile to form 1-methylene-3-cyano-4,4-difluorocyclobutene. The 1,1-difluoro-olefines may be hydrogenated to form the corresponding saturated difluoro compounds.
