Abstract

Prior to rolling, steel ingots or billets are protected against oxidation by contacting them while hot with the vapours of a metal compound which decomposes at the temperature of the ingots or billets to deposit thereon a metal coating. Metal compounds which may be used are nickel, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and cobalt carbonyls; cobalt nitrosyl carbonyl; osmium and ruthenium carbonyl chlorides; antimony hydride; chromyl chloride; metal nitroxyls; and metal alkyls. The metal compound may be entrained in a carrier gas such as cargon dioxide, helium, nitrogen, hydrogen or the product of controlled burning of oxygen-free hydrocarbon gases. Clad steel sheet may thus be produced by cooling a forged steel billet to 400 DEG F., coating it with metal, heating at to 1300 DEG -2500 DEG F., and passing it through the rollers of a roughing train and finishing train. Specifications 751,523 and 758,924 are referred to.
