890,536. Fuel injection pumps. SCHAFER O., SCHAFER, G., SCHAFER jun. O., and SCHAFER jun. G., [trading as KUGELFISCHER G. SCHAFER & CO.]. Nov. 25, 1959, No. 39972/59. Class 102(1). The pistons of fuel injection pumps are double acting and are positively actuated on each stroke either by a surrounding radially acting rotary cam or by opposed axially acting rotary cams, both ends of the pistons being in cam engagement, and the spill point in each stroke is controlled by the angular position of the piston and can be altered during delivery. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 5, 6 the piston 46 is reciprocated in a carrier 47 by rods 54, 55 sliding in guides 56, 57 and engaging a three lobed cam surface 60. Fuel is drawn into the cylinder spaces through valves 50, 51 and delivered to oscillating distributing valves 65, 66 including spring loaded valves 71, 72, which deliver to outlets 67, 68. The distributers are oscillated by eccentric pegs 75, 76 which engage a cam track so shaped that the distributers are stationary during delivery. The position of the spillway 78 in relation to the mean position of the piston 46 is adjusted by means of an eccentric ring 80, the angular position of the piston being adjusted by a rack 25. Leakage grooves 83, 84 are provided in the guides 56, 57 and also grooves 85, 86 which are fed with pressure oil by a pump 88 having a pressure relief valve 93. A two-piston embodiment in which the pistons are actuated by opposed axially acting cams is described, and also a single radial piston embodiment ; in both embodiments the pistons, discharge directly to the outlets.
