Abstract

1465285 Fuel injection pumps BENDIX CORP 28 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 28903/74 Heading F1A In a fuel injection pump having a rotor 106 which distributes the output in a passage 123 sequentially to delivery passage 124, the actual quantity delivered to each outlet is determined by a pair of electromagnetic spill valves 111, one valve closing to start injection and the other valve opening to end injection. Each valve 111 comprises a valve piston 137 urged towards its open position by a spring 140 and moved to its closed position, shown, by a coil 141. The delivery passage 123 is in permanent communication with an annular chamber 127 around each valve piston 137 through a groove 125 and an annular chamber 109 in the rotor 106 and a respective passage 126. When each valve 111 is open, its annular chamber 127 aligns with an annular groove 128 in the associated valve piston 137, whereby fuel spills from the chamber 127 through a spill path 129-136 to an outlet fitting 142. An electronic circuit causes each valve to open and close at regular intervals, the period of the overlap when both valves are closed determining the quantity delivered. Simultaneous advance or retard of the operations of both valves varies the timing of injection. The pump shown is of the kind having cam ring operated radial pistons 102, but a pump having in-line cylinders provided with pistons (4) reciprocated by a cam-shaft (3) coupled to the distributer rotor is also described, Fig. 1 (not shown).
