Abstract

888,432. Priming; fuel injection systems. KIGASS Ltd. Jan. 28, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 2993/57. Classes, 7(3) and 7(5). In a combined pump and fuel flow control fitting for internal-combustion engines, the fitting comprises a body to which the pump is assembled, the body having a transfer passage into which at least one inlet passage .opens and from which a primary discharge passage extends, a manually-operable valve being installed in the transfer passage to control, flow from the inlet passage or passages to the primary discharge passage and to a branch passage communicating with the valve controlled intake of the pump, and a secondary discharge passage in the body communicates with the valve controlled outlet of the pump. As shown the body member 1 consisting of a die casting has two inlet passages 2 and 3 which open into and are perpendicular to the innermost end of the transfer passage 4 and two discharge passages 5, 6. A pipe (not shown) connected into the tapped outer end of the primary discharge passage 5 is connected to the fuel injection pump of the engine and another pipe also (not shown) connected into the tapped outer end of the secondary discharge passage 6 is connected to an atomizer or atomizers in the induction manifold of the engine. Provided that the nose 12d of the needle valve is seated upon and is closing the adjacent end of the restricted passage 8 no fuel is able to flow from the tank through either of the inlet passages. However, upon rotating the needle valve by the handle 12c in the direction which causes the valve to move axially away from the restricted passage the valve nose is unseated to allow fuel to flow from the tank into the transfer and restricted passages. As soon as the fuel has access to the restricted passage it may flow to and through the primary discharge passage to the fuel injection pump of the engine and/or through the branch passage 7 and intake passage 27 to the interior of the diaphragm. If the level of fuel in the tank should be allowed to fall to the top of the pipe 10 it is necessary in order to maintain the flow of fuel to the injection pump to rotate the needle valve in the direction which withdraws its nose 12d from the restricted passage a distance sufficient to take the sealing ring 16 into the larger diameter portion 4b of the passage. Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing the flexible valve plate 26.
