Abstract

A method of cleansing soiled dishes comprises the application to the dishes of liquid cleansing agents which comprise (a) a sparingly soluble mixed ethylene and propylene oxide adduct of a compound containing a lipophilic group of at least 4 carbon atoms and also having a labile hydrogen atom, preferably an alkylaryl hydroxy compound in which the alkyl group has 4-10 carbon atoms and the aryl group is benzene or naphthalene, and (b) a solution promoter, preferably an adduct of ethylene oxide with a hydroxy compound. (a) may be derived from a fatty alcohol of 6-14 carbon atoms, but it is preferred that it be an alkylphenol, such as nonylphenol, condensed simultaneously or successively with 3-8 molar proportions of ethylene oxide and 1-5 molar proportions of propylene oxide; (a) may also be derived from amines, mercaptans, carboxylic or sulphonic acids, amides and alkanolamides. (b) is usually an ethylene oxide condensate of phenol, such as nonylphenol, but may also be a condensate with an aliphatic compound containing 6-20 carbon atoms; such compounds may advantageously be esterified with sulphuric, phosphoric, or boric acids, or be carboxymethylated with chloracetic acid, and subsequently neutralized. To obtain a clear solution, ethanol may be incorporated. The compositions used in the invention are especially suitable for use in automatic dishwashing machines.
