Abstract

The invention comprises surface-active agents having the formula: R-O-R1CH2O(CH2-CH2O)nH where R is a monovalent, and R1 is a divalent, saturated hydrocarbon radical having 4 to 15 carbon atoms, and n is 4 to 40. They are prepared by condensing an ether alcohol ROR1CH2OH with the required amount of ethylene oxide, preferably in the presence of a catalyst such as NaOCH3, NaOH, KOH or BF3. The catalyst may subsequently be removed by treatment with an ion-exchange resin. The ether alcohols may be prepared as described in Specification 772,004 or by the Oxo process.
