Abstract
Benzene hexachloride comprising a mixture of isomers, gamma benzene hexachloride or a concentrate of the gamma isomer, is purified by treating with an aqueous solution of an emulsifier. Suitable emulsifiers are the alkyl sulphonates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, alcohol sulphates, condensation products of ethylene oxide with high molecular alcohols or amines, soaps and condensation products of high molecular fatty acids, used preferably in a 0.1-1.0 per cent aqueous solution. In an example, benzene hexachloride containing 75 per cent of the gamma isomer is purified by washing with an aqueous solution of the condensation product from 1 mol. of oleic acid and 20 mols. of ethylene oxide.
