Abstract

For cleaning processes effected under acid conditions, use is made (after appropriate dilution) of a liquid detergent composition comprising an aqueous solution of an alkylaryl sulphonate and an alkylene-oxide surface-active agent, the concentration of the alkylaryl sulphonate being greater than the maximum obtainable, under otherwise identical conditions, in the absence of the alkylene-oxide surfaceactive agent. The alkylaryl sulphonate may be sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and may contain a builder, e.g. a sodium phosphate or sodium sulphate. The alkylene-oxide surfaceactive agent may be a reaction product of an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, with an alcohol, a phenol, a carboxylic acid, an amine, an amide or a mercaptan containing a group of 8-25 carbon atoms. Specified alkylene-oxide surface active agents are the products sold under the Registered Trade Marks Lubrol and Nonex, and reaction products of ethylene oxide with wool grease, dodecylphenol, octylphenol, polyethylene glycol fatty acid partial esters and a mixture of aliphatic amines of 16-18 carbon atoms. The solutions may contain 15 per cent or more of alkylaryl sulphonate and, after dilution, are useful for washing wool and other materials under acid conditions, e.g. in the presence of a little acetic acid. Examples are given.
