Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0883734/IV (b)/1> wherein Y is hydrogen, a -hydroxy, b -hydroxy or keto, W is a -hydroxy, b -hydroxy or keto or YX is a double bond and a process for the preparation thereof by subjecting a compound of the formula <FORM:0883734/IV (b)/2> to oximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in solution in an amine such as morpholine or pyridine or in alcohol or other suitable organic solvents in the presence of an alkali metal base, and, if desired, reducing the 17-isonitrosoandrostane thus produced to form a 17b -aminoandrostane. Said reduction may be effected with lithium in a mixture of ether, isopropyl alcohol and liquid ammonia.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound having the formula <FORM:0883734/VI/1> wherein Y is hydrogen, a -hydroxy, b -hydroxy or keto or YX taken together is a saturated or double bond and a pharmaceutical diluent. They are employed orally as pills, tablets, capsules, syrups and elixirs in liquid forms for injection or topically as ointments, creams and lotions with or without coacting antibiotics.
