Abstract

The invention comprises a 2a -methyl-17a ,21-epoxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione having the formula <FORM:0884549/IV (b)/1> wherein Y is b -hydroxymethylene or carbonyl and Z is hydrogen or fluorine provided that Y does not represent b -hydroxymethylene when Z represents hydrogen and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting a compound having the formula <FORM:0884549/IV (b)/2> wherein Y and Z are as above defined with a metal fluoride or silver carbonate and then isolating the desired compound from the 21-fluoro compound concomitantly produced by chromatography. As metal fluoride there may be used silver fluoride. Illustrative products of the invention are 2a - methyl - 17a ,21 - epoxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,11,20 - trione and 2a - methyl - 9a - fluoro - 11b - hydroxy - 17a ,21 - epoxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,20-dione.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition comprises a compound having the general formula <FORM:0884549/VI/1> wherein Y is a beta-hydroxymethylene or carbonyl group and Z is hydrogen or fluorine, in admixture with a pharmaceutical diluent or carrier. Administration may be orally as pills, tablets, capsules, syrups or elixirs, or in liquid forms for injectable products.
