Abstract

The invention comprises a compound having the formula: <FORM:0849072/IV(b)/1> wherein R is keto or b -hydroxy and a process for the production thereof which comprises treating 6, 17a -dimethyltestosterone with a reducing agent selected from the group consisting of alkali metals in liquid ammonia and hydrogen over a palladium catalyst. Illustrative products of the invention are 6a , 17a -dimethylandrostane-3b , 17b -diol, 6b , 17a -dimethylandrostane-3b , 17b -diol, 6a , 17a -dimethyl-17b -hydroxyandrostan-3-one, 6b , 17a -dimethyl-17b -hydroxyandrostan-3-one.ALSO:Compounds having the formula:- <FORM:0849072/VI/1> wherein R represents keto or b -hydroxy, can be administered in the forms of pills, tablets, capsules, syrups or elixirs for oral use, or in liquid forms which are adaptable to the natural and synthetic cortical steroid hormones for injectable products.
