Abstract
The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:0896207/IV (b)/1> wherein X is the carbonyl radical, the b -hydroxymethylene radical <FORM:0896207/IV (b)/2> or the lower-acyloxy methylene radical <FORM:0896207/IV (b)/3> and the acyl radical is that of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing 1-12 carbon atoms inclusive, and Y is H or a lower-hydrocarbon radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms inclusive and a process for the preparation thereof by treating an 11b -hydroxy-androstan with a hypohalous acid and then treating with SO2 to obtain 17-keto-9(11)-androstene, then if desired treating the latter compound with an alkylating agent to produce a 17b -hydroxy-17a -alkyl-9(11)-androstene and then if desired esterifying to produce the corresponding 17-ester. As reducing agent there may be used sodium borohydride. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic and progestational properties incorporating the compounds above are administered orally in pills, tablets and capsules and in liquid forms for injection.
