Abstract

The invention comprises 2a -hydroxy-steroids of the general formula <FORM:0839376/IV (b)/1> in which, when R1 represents H(H), R represents O or (H)COCH2OH, when R1 represents O, R represents (H)OH, O, (H)COCH3 or (H)COCH2 OH, or when R1 represents (H)OH, R represents (H)OH, O, (H)COCH3, (H)COCH2OH or (OH) COCH2OH, and a process for the preparation of compounds of the above general formula in which R represents (H)OH, O, (H)COCH3, (H)COCH2OH or (OH)COCH2OH, and R1 represents (H)H, (H)OH, or O, by reacting a corresponding 4b ,5 - epoxy - 3 - keto - steroid of the general formula <FORM:0839376/IV (b)/2> with sulphuric acid in acetone. In the examples the following compounds are prepared by the above process: 2a -hydroxy-progesterone, 2a - hydroxy - tertosterone, 2a -hydroxy - desoxycorticosterone (which is then acetylated to form the corresponding diacetate), 2a ,11(a and p b )-dihydroxy-progesterone and D 4 - pregnen - 2a - ol - 3,11,20 - trione. Specification 838,771 is referred to.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition suitable for oral administration or administration by injection contains as the active ingredient a 2a -hydroxy-steroid of the general formula <FORM:0839376/VI/1> wherein R represents (H)OH, (H)COCH3, (H)COCH2OH or (OH)COCH2OH, and R1 represents (H)H, (H)OH or O. Specification 838,771 is referred to.
